Testimony of Greg MayoTwenty-Five Years of Alcohol and Drug Abuse...Changed by God!
My story begins with twenty-five years of alcohol and drug abuse. Because of my addiction, my marriage was broken up. My life went down hill, climaxing with two, miserable years when I lost respect for everything, including myself. Then, my father had a heart attack in August 2001. I went to the hospital to visit him. While at the hospital with my dad, I met my mother’s pastor. He told me if I really wanted to change, I needed to get help. He shared that I would need to have a desire to change. My life seemed hopeless. I did need help. Then my mother's pastor told me about the Durham Rescue Mission and he spoke highly of its reputation. Afterwards, on September 7th, my mother and father brought me to the Durham Rescue Mission. On September 18th, after the attacks on America, I finally stopped running. God had my attention, and I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. The rescue mission has really helped me with patience, kindness, and love towards my fellow man. The Biblical counseling has helped me understand the Bible and God's desire for all men, women, and children to know Him. And, now I have no desire to get high or drink anymore. I hope I can be an example to the other guys as to what God can do if you just trust Him. Now, I want to be a servant for my Savior. 1 John 1:9 says “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” This scripture constantly reminds me that I may often fall short, but with confession and repentance, I may regain fellowship with my Savior. 2 Timothy 2:15 is another verse that means a lot to me. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” I must grow daily in my faith, my desire, and in the service to my Savior, learning all I can about Him and how to please Him. My goal for the future is to find a mission field in which I can share the same love of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ as it has been shared with me. Please pray for me. I want to be the best Christian I can be. I will need lots of prayer and sensitivity to the conviction of the Holy Spirit.
