Drug Addicted Social Worker Finds Help and Hope at Durham Rescue Mission

"How do you help other people when secretly you are struggling with the same problems?" That was my dilemma. I was a Social Worker, trying to help people with drug problems, while I was hooked on drugs and alcohol myself. Like so many of the people I was supposed to be helping, I had started drinking as a teenager. Then while I was in college, I started using marijuana and finally went on to cocaine.

By April of last year, I was to the point where I was "working to use." Finally, I couldn't stand it anymore. I just didn't want my life to be a waste. I tried three different drug treatment programs. Being a Social Worker, I knew how to work the system. I could make it look like I was changing, when in fact I wasn't.

Finally, I went to my pastor for help. He helped me in the greatest way a person can help; he led me to Jesus Christ! Imagine I had been going to church all my life, yet I did not have a personal relationship with Jesus. I am so thankful 1 John 1:9 is in the Bible. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

After being saved, my pastor, Bro. Elam, recommended I try the Durham Rescue Mission. At first, I wasn't too comfortable with the "rules", but I needed help.

Mrs. Pleasants, Ms. Ball, and Mrs. Woodard are all very special to me. Mrs. "P" taught me to examine myself in light of the Bible. Velvet and Mrs. Woodard helped me to understand and love the Word of God.

I graduated from the program on May 7th. Now, I face a new trial. A few months ago, I got a cold that I could not get rid of. Finally giving in, I went to the doctor. They ordered some tests, which revealed I was in complete renal (kidney) failure (not as a result of drug use.) In addition, they found some spots on my lungs. I am now going through dialysis three times a week and we are praying about a kidney transplant.

I am trusting in the Lord. When I am better, I want to look into starting a home for teenage girls who are in trouble. Please pray for me. Today, I want to serve the Lord. I am facing some problems that are too big for me, but praise the Lord, nothing is impossible with God.

I want to thank all of you who support this ministry with your prayers and gifts. Because of you, I am a life that is changed.
