Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Durham Rescue Mission's Web Page! I would like to introduce you to the oldest and largest organization in the Durham area with the purpose of feeding, sheltering, clothing, and counseling alcoholics, drug abusers, and others less fortunate than you and I.

We are excited for you to learn more about our ministries for the needy and homeless in, and around, the Research Triangle area. Our ministry began in November 1974, when we opened our first Mission Home for men. Over the past 30 years, we have expanded to include a home for mothers with children, a shelter for families, and a shelter for single women.

Our organization is a non-profit, tax-exempt, faith-based ministry. Every morning, we begin the day by having devotions with our residents. We believe the Word of God can, and does, change people's lives.

In order to offer a "helping hand up" to someone who feels that their life is hopeless, you must first meet their basic needs. At the Durham Rescue Mission, we offer three hot meals a day, clean clothing, and safe shelter. After folks have their basic needs met and you have shown them that you truly care about them, you can then present the wonderful story of God's Love. Last year, 397 souls made a profession of faith!

Over the past 30 years, we have seen Christ make a difference in many lives. It is always exciting to see someone released from their addiction to alcohol and/or other drugs. We feel that our ministry is an exciting one, and we count it a joy to be part of a worthy organization helping men, women, and children.

All of this is made possible with the help of our friends and supporters. We are truly thankful for each person who prays for our residents and staff, and for those who give financial gifts to help reach out to the hungry, hurting, and homeless. We are supported by tax-deductible gifts from individuals, churches, businesses, and civic groups. We do not receive any federal, state, or local government funds.

We hope you enjoy browsing our website. We would love to hear your comments. If we can ever be a help to you or someone you know, please contact us. We would be honored to have you come over for a tour of our Men’s campus and/or our Women and Children’s campus. I think you will be excited to see what is being done in our community to help others in need. To schedule a tour, just give us a call at 919-688-9641, ext. 5036.

Thanks for allowing us to share our burden for the homeless and needy through our website.

Sincerely,

Ernie C. Mills
