Volunteer Requirements

General Requirements

Thank you for volunteering to help us help others. We are extremely honored to have you join us in our ministry to hungry and homeless men, women, and children.

While on our campus, we sincerely hope you will have many opportunities to interact with our residents. We encourage you to show patience and understanding; however, please have firm boundaries and limits. Report immediately any inappropriate behavior. If you feel uncomfortable at all, we want to correct the situation.

To ensure that your experience as a Durham Rescue Mission Volunteer is pleasant and safe, we respectfully request you read over our guidelines and requirements. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask our Volunteer Coordinators or any staff member.

Children

We love to have children come with their families, churches, schools, or other groups. To ensure their safety, they should:

  • Stay within the fenced areas of our campus, with an adult, at all times.
  • Be accompanied by their parent or guardian in any of our buildings.
  • Be respectful and do not tamper with others’ personal belongings.
  • Be respectful of those who are working and/or sleeping; while inside, please walk and talk softly.
  • Only use equipment, including playground equipment, designated for their age group.
  • Wash hands frequently when handling food.
  • Listen to and obey staff members.

Dress Code

The Durham Rescue Mission is a faith-based ministry on a co-ed campus. We have standards for our staff, residents, and volunteers.

  • Clothing must be modest, loose fitting, and appropriate for the assigned tasks.
  • Undergarments must be worn.
  • Clothing must be free of obscene pictures, language, or advertisements.
  • Shoes must be worn at all times and should be appropriate for the assigned task.

Leaders

The Durham Rescue Mission is thankful to have the help of volunteers. The following guidelines should help your visit run as smoothly and safely as possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask our Volunteer Coordinators or any staff member. Due to the nature of this ministry, it is highly recommended that you:

  • Keep track of all group members.
  • Make members of your group aware that it is in their best interest that they do not leave the campus alone.
  • Let your group members know that bathrooms are available on the second floor of the main building on the Men's Campus and just off the lobby of our Women's and Children's Campus.
  • Let group members know the importance of practicing universal precaution and encourage frequent hand washing, especially when handling food.
  • Remind members of your group to stay with their group. No one is to be alone with a member of the opposite gender.

Report any problems, injuries, or infractions of the rules by residents, staff, or other volunteers to a Volunteer Coordinator.
