My Night in a Box

It’s a scene that plays out across our country every day. A scrappy looking person with defeat on their face, sincerity in their eyes, desperation written on cardboard. Similar questions cross everyone’s mind: how did that happen, am I making it worse by offering a hand-out, are they on drugs, I just can't help at every single intersection, corner, bus stop – ‘What do I do?’.

On Friday, April 3rd, over 40 students from Duke, UNC, NCCU, and NSCU separated themselves from all the luxuries of life, and learned about the many different aspects of homelessness; as well as actually experiencing a taste of it.

Organized and managed by The Durham Rescue Mission, this will be just the beginning of an ongoing effort to get better community outreach for awareness, support and education on the right ways to help.
